Dedicated streaming servers on unmetered ports

Streaming runs out of port long before it runs out of CPU. Our streaming servers come with an unmetered port, so a busy night doesn't turn into a per-terabyte bill: 1 Gbps from $159 a month in Ashburn, Chicago or Los Angeles, and 10 Gbps from $499 a month in Chicago.

What people stream from our servers

Anything that pushes steady outbound traffic for hours is a bad fit for a per-terabyte plan.

Origin servers

Your origin feeds a CDN or your own edge boxes. It needs a port that never chokes and a bill that doesn't move when a stream goes viral.

Restreaming

Take one feed in and push it to several platforms at once. That multiplies your outbound traffic, which is exactly what an unmetered port is for.

Live events and radio

Hours of steady output to a known audience size. Size the port to your peak concurrent listeners or viewers and stop counting bytes.

Video on demand

Store the library on the server and serve it straight from a 1 TB SSD or bigger drives. Storage add-ons are on the order form.

Private links between boxes

Run an ingest box and a delivery box side by side. A 10 Gbps private network between your servers is $20 a month, and 1 Gbps private is free.

Protected from floods

Every dedicated server includes 4 Gbps of DDoS protection, with 6, 8 and 10 Gbps tiers on the order form.

Sizing

How big a port do you need?

The math is bitrate times concurrent viewers. A 6 Mbps stream to 160 viewers is 960 Mbps, and that fills a gigabit. Plan on using about 80% of the port so a spike doesn’t drop frames.

Stream bitrate (example)1 Gbps port, at 80%10 Gbps port, at 80%
3 Mbpsabout 260 viewersabout 2,600 viewers
6 Mbpsabout 130 viewersabout 1,300 viewers
15 Mbpsabout 50 viewersabout 530 viewers

These are worked examples, not limits we impose. Your encoder settings decide the real bitrate.

Why unmetered? Our metered servers include at least 30 TB a month, then charge $0.02 per GB. Push 100 TB in a month and the 70 TB past the allowance adds $1,400 to the bill. The $159 Xeon D-1541 special has 64 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD and a 1 Gbps unmetered port, so the same month costs $159.

Need more than one box can push? Our 10 Gbps unmetered dedicated servers start at $499 a month in Chicago, and we can build a cluster around them.

How much is a dedicated streaming server?

A 1 Gbps unmetered server starts at $159 a month in Ashburn, Chicago or Los Angeles. 10 Gbps unmetered starts at $499 a month in Chicago. Setup is $0 and there’s no contract.

Is unmetered really unmetered?

Yes. Unmetered plans have no cap, no overage and no throttling. You’re limited by the port speed, not by a monthly terabyte count.

How many viewers can one server handle?

Multiply your bitrate by your concurrent viewers. At 6 Mbps, a 1 Gbps port handles about 130 viewers if you keep 20% headroom, and a 10 Gbps port about 1,300.

Which location should I pick?

The one closest to most of your viewers. Our latency page has measured numbers from 29 cities to all three sites.
